Visual Description
The Ref. 11621 is a round 18k yellow gold Cougar, 32 to 33 mm wide, with chronograph pushers beside the crown. Fellows describes silvered and black dials with baton hour markers and subsidiary dials at 4, 8 and 12 o'clock; Millon a champagne dial with applied baton markers, a railway minute track and sword hands; and Sotheby's a white dial with Roman numerals and subsidiary dials for the date and the 12-hour and 30-minute registers. Millon describes a case back secured by eight screws and a crown set with a sapphire cabochon. Examples come on a gold bracelet with a double folding clasp or on a strap with a gold deployant clasp.
Reference Significance
The 11621 is the chronograph among the Cougar references Archiva records. It matches the Ref. 887904 in size and metal but carries a quartz chronograph movement, the Cartier Cal. 212P, which Fellows and Millon both name. Fellows and Sotheby's call the watch the Cougar Chronoflex. Sotheby's catalogs one example as a limited edition to commemorate an anniversary, without giving the number made.
Historical Context
Sotheby's dates its example to about 1997. Antiquorum sold an 18k yellow gold Cougar quartz chronograph with registers, 34 mm, in Geneva in November 1997, without printing a reference. No source found gives a first or last year for the 11621.
What to Look For
Read the case back for 11621 or 1162 1 and a serial beginning with C. Have the chronograph tested on every register. Check the crown's cabochon and the eight case back screws. Catalogs give 32 and 33 mm for the same reference, so a small difference in a listing's size is not by itself a different watch. Ask whether the gold bracelet or the gold deployant clasp comes with the watch.
