Visual Description

The Ref. 0902 is the Santos Carrée scaled for a smaller wrist: a 24mm square case in stainless steel with an 18k yellow gold bezel carrying the signature eight exposed screws. The white dial features Cartier's painted black Roman numerals with a railroad minute track and the characteristic hidden Cartier signature within the X marker at 10 o'clock. Blued steel sword hands and a blue sapphire cabochon crown maintain the visual language of the larger men's Santos references. The integrated two-tone bracelet alternates steel and gold links, matching the case-and-bezel contrast — the same design grammar as the men's Ref. 2961, proportioned for a 24mm case width.

Reference Significance

The Ref. 0902 extended the 1978 Santos concept to a ladies' audience at a time when women's luxury sport watches were rare. While many maisons offered women's watches primarily as jewelry pieces or downsized men's designs with added diamonds, the Santos 0902 preserved the original's athletic identity — automatic movement, integrated bracelet, exposed screws — at a scale that worked on a smaller wrist without feeling like a shrunken afterthought.

This reference occupies an increasingly interesting market position. The broader trend toward smaller vintage watches — driven by collectors of all genders discovering that 24–30mm cases from the 1980s and 1990s wear with an elegance that modern oversized pieces cannot replicate — has lifted demand for pieces like the 0902 that were originally marketed as ladies' models but are now appreciated on their own terms.

Historical Context

The 0902 belongs to the second generation of Santos Carrée production, following the model's 1978 debut. By the mid-1980s, the Santos had become one of Cartier's most commercially successful lines, and expanding the collection to include dedicated ladies' references (rather than expecting women to wear the men's models or forgo the Santos entirely) was a natural commercial move.

The ETA 2670 movement — a smaller-diameter automatic caliber designed specifically for women's watches — allowed Cartier to offer a genuine automatic in a 24mm case. This was a meaningful technical decision: many competitors offered only quartz movements at this case size, sacrificing mechanical credibility for dimensional constraints. The 0902's automatic movement is part of what distinguishes it from the more common quartz ladies' Santos references that followed.

Production continued through the early-to-mid 1990s before the Santos Galbée's rounded redesign absorbed the ladies' segment. Surviving examples with original bracelets in good condition are becoming harder to source as the neo-vintage market absorbs available supply.

What to Look For

The two-tone construction requires careful inspection of both metals. The 18k gold bezel should show consistent color with no visible thinning from over-polishing — gold is softer than the surrounding steel and shows wear more readily. All eight bezel screws should be original with matching slot depths.

Bracelet condition is paramount. The 0902's smaller bracelet links are more susceptible to stretch than the larger men's models, and replacement bracelets are extremely difficult to source. Test for lateral play in each link and check the clasp mechanism for wear. An original bracelet in tight condition adds substantially to value.

Confirm the movement is the ETA 2670 automatic (not a quartz replacement, which would indicate a non-original swap). The blue sapphire cabochon crown should be intact and properly seated — these are vulnerable to chipping on smaller crowns. Case back markings should include the reference number and Cartier hallmarks.
