Visual Description

The Ref. 1440 is the 27 mm Diabolo: Monaco Legend, Eppli and Amsterdam Watch Company give 27 mm, and Aguttes and Antiquorum 27.5 mm, with Antiquorum giving 9 mm thick. The round case is 18k yellow gold. Dials are white or cream with Roman numerals, or guilloché silver with painted radial Roman numerals on the anniversary example Antiquorum sold. Most examples are on a leather strap with a signed 18k gold Cartier buckle or folding clasp; Eppli sold one on an 18k yellow gold Cartier bracelet.

Reference Significance

The 1440 is the smaller of the plain yellow gold quartz Diabolos; the Ref. 1420 is 32 mm, with a date. Monaco Legend and Eppli catalog the movement as the Cal. 157.06. Monaco Legend writes the number as 1440-0 and Amsterdam Watch Company as 14400.

In 1997 Cartier issued the 1440 as a special series for its 150th anniversary. Aguttes sold one titled Diabolo 1847 Louis Cartier, with a warranty certificate dated 4 September 1997, and Antiquorum describes a limited edition of 150 pieces.

Historical Context

Amsterdam Watch Company dates one example to about 1994, the anniversary series dates from 1997, and Monaco Legend dates another to the 2000s. Monaco Legend gives 1991 for the launch of the Diabolo model. No source gives an end date.

What to Look For

Case: The case and lugs should be crisp rather than rounded by polishing.

Papers: The anniversary example Aguttes sold came with its case and a 1997 warranty certificate stamped for the 150 years sale.

Movement: The quartz should run and keep time after a new battery.

Buckle or clasp: Check whether it is gold and signed Cartier.

How to tell it apart

What separates a Ref. 1440 from its neighbors, and what to check before you buy or sell one.

What is a Cartier Diabolo Ref. 1440 worth?

Archiva has found one public sale of Ref. 1440 in the last three years: $2,950 at Aguttes in March 2025. One sale is a rough guide, not a market price.

What is the Cartier Diabolo Ref. 1440?

The 27 mm Diabolo: a round 18k yellow gold case, a white, cream or silvered dial with Roman numerals, and a quartz movement that Monaco Legend and Eppli give as the Cal. 157.06, on a leather strap with a gold Cartier buckle or clasp, or on a gold bracelet. Dated examples run from about 1994 into the 2000s.

My papers say 1440-0 or 14400. Is that the same watch?

Yes. Monaco Legend catalogs a 27 mm yellow gold quartz Diabolo as Reference 1440-0, and Amsterdam Watch Company lists one as Reference 14400. Aguttes, Antiquorum and Eppli print 1440.

What is the 1847 Louis Cartier Diabolo?

A special series of the 1440 made in 1997 for Cartier's 150th anniversary. Aguttes sold one with a warranty certificate dated 4 September 1997 stamped for the 150 years sale, and Antiquorum describes a limited edition of 150 pieces.

How is the 1440 different from the Ref. 1420?

By size and the date. Both are 18k yellow gold quartz Diabolos. The 1420 is 32 mm with a date; the 1440 is 27 to 27.5 mm, and none of the records opened shows a date window.

What should I check before buying a Ref. 1440?

That the case and lugs are crisp rather than rounded by polishing; that the case back carries the reference and a case number; that the quartz runs and keeps time; and whether the buckle or clasp is gold and signed Cartier.
