Visual Description

The Ref. 78101 is the large Fabergé: a rounded rectangle in 18k yellow gold, about 26 × 32.5 mm, curved along its length. Monaco Legend, which also calls the model the Incurvée, describes a curvature that wraps around the wrist, and Finarte catalogs a rounded rectangular case; Aguttes calls its example cushion-shaped. Sotheby's records the back as secured by four screws.

The dial is white or silvered with Roman numerals. Aguttes records a railway minute track, and Monaco Legend a Paris signature at 6 o'clock. Examples have come on leather straps, one of them with a Cartier gold deployant buckle at Finarte.

Reference Significance

The 78101 is the larger of the two Fabergé sizes. At about 26 × 32.5 mm it is roughly 6 mm wider and 5.5 mm longer than the Ref. 67082, which Sotheby's catalogs at 20 × 27 mm on the hand-wound cal. 2412.

Its movement is recorded three ways. Cambi gives the Cal. 78-1 and Sotheby's the cal. 78 with 17 jewels, both hand-wound, while Monaco Legend catalogs its example with the cal. 2512, also with 17 jewels.

Historical Context

Sotheby's writes that the 78101 was produced during the early 1970s and dates its example to about 1971, the year the Prince of Kuwait gave it to a general in the national army. Cambi and Aguttes date examples to about 1970, and Monaco Legend and Finarte to the 1970s. No source we opened gives an end date.

Two examples carry official dials. Sotheby's offered one with the crest of the Kuwait Military Armed Forces on its white dial, offered with a contract of sale from the family of the original owner, and Monaco Legend one it catalogs as commissioned by the Jordanian Royal Family, with a royal double-signature dial.

What to Look For

Start with the case back. Sotheby's and Aguttes record case numbers that begin with the reference and run into the serial (781'011'041 and 781010546), while Monaco Legend, Finarte and Cambi print the serial alone. A number beginning 67082 belongs to the small Fabergé.

The movement should be hand-wound, and Sotheby's and Monaco Legend record case, dial and movement as signed. On the dial, look for crisp Roman numerals. Check that the curve of the case is even and its edges crisp. The buckle matters too: Finarte's example came on a Cartier gold deployant buckle, while Sotheby's offered one on an unsigned gilt metal buckle.

How to tell it apart

What separates a Ref. 78101 from its neighbors, and what to check before you buy or sell one.

What is a Cartier Fabergé Ref. 78101 worth?

Archiva has found two public sales of Ref. 78101 in the last three years: $18,950 at Monaco Legend Auctions in October 2025 and $8,150 at Finarte in June 2024. Two sales are a rough guide, not a market price.

What is the Cartier Fabergé Ref. 78101?

The large Fabergé: a rounded rectangular case in 18k yellow gold, about 26 × 32.5 mm and curved to follow the wrist, with a white or silvered dial with Roman numerals and a hand-wound movement. Cambi catalogs the movement as the Cal. 78-1, Sotheby's as the cal. 78 with 17 jewels and Monaco Legend as the cal. 2512 with 17 jewels.

How is the 78101 different from the small Fabergé Ref. 67082?

By size and movement. Sotheby's catalogs the Ref. 67082 at 20 × 27 mm with the hand-wound cal. 2412; the 78101 measures about 26 × 32.5 mm and is cataloged with the cal. 78-1, cal. 78 or cal. 2512. The case back tells them apart, because a 78101 case number begins with 78101.

What should the case back of a 78101 read?

Sotheby's recorded case number 781'011'041 and Aguttes 781010546, the reference followed by the serial. Monaco Legend, Finarte and Cambi printed the serial alone: 0'845, 0416 and 1490. Sotheby's describes the back as secured by four screws.

Were 78101s made with special dials?

Yes. Sotheby's offered one with the crest of the Kuwait Military Armed Forces on its white dial, which it says the Prince of Kuwait gave to a general in the national army in 1971, and Monaco Legend offered one it catalogs as commissioned by the Jordanian Royal Family, with a royal double-signature dial.

What should I check before buying a 78101?

A case number that begins with 78101 (some catalogs print the serial alone); a hand-wound movement, with case, dial and movement signed as Sotheby's and Monaco Legend record; a white or silvered dial with crisp Roman numerals; an even curve and crisp edges on the case; and the buckle, since Finarte's example came on a Cartier gold deployant buckle while Sotheby's offered one on an unsigned gilt metal buckle.
