Visual Description

The Ref. 2220 is a round Vendôme in 18k yellow gold, 32 mm across. Monaco Legend describes a three-body case with a stepped band, a rounded bezel and Vendôme-type lugs, and Craft + Tailored a crown set with a sapphire cabochon.

The dial is engine-turned, cataloged as silvered or silver guilloché by Antiquorum and Monaco Legend and as white or ivory by dealers, with painted Roman numerals and, in Monaco Legend's catalog, the secret signature in one of the X numerals. The hands are blued steel and sword-shaped. The watch wears on a leather strap with an 18k gold Cartier deployant clasp that is part of the case.

Reference Significance

The 2220 is the Vendôme Bi-Plan: the clasp folds under the case between the lugs, so the strap carries no separate buckle. Monaco Legend calls this the watch's peculiarity, and Antiquorum describes the clasp as integrated to the case.

It is the 32 mm hand-wound Vendôme of its period. The Ref. 78090 is the 33 mm hand-wound Vendôme of the 1970s and 1980s, and the Ref. 67080 the 26 mm one.

Historical Context

Auction houses date the 2220 from about 1990: Bonhams dates one circa 1990, Sotheby's one circa 1991 and Monaco Legend one to the 1990s. Dealers date later examples to the 2000s and to about 2010. No source found gives a production range.

Antiquorum sold the example numbered C 124 195 twice: in 2019 as Reference 2220, and in 2023 under the catalog number W1514457.

What to Look For

Read the case back for 2220 and a C serial, and check that the deployant clasp is built into the case and signed Cartier.

Ask for a photograph of the movement. Monaco Legend, Antiquorum and Craft + Tailored catalog the cal. 9P2, which Antiquorum describes as adjusted to temperatures and five positions; Amsterdam Vintage Watches catalogs a Piaget 40P in an example of about 2010.

How to tell it apart

What separates a Ref. 2220 from its neighbors, and what to check before you buy or sell one.

What is a Cartier Vendôme Ref. 2220 worth?

Archiva has found one public sale of Ref. 2220 in the last five years: $8,950 at Monaco Legend Auctions in April 2023. One sale is a rough guide, not a market price. For comparison, from November 2023 to November 2026: Ref. 78090 (18k gold, manual, large 1970s–80s): $6,700 to $10,100, median $7,850 across 3 sales.

What is the Vendôme Bi-Plan Ref. 2220?

A 32 mm round Vendôme in 18k yellow gold with a manual-wind movement, cataloged by Monaco Legend, Antiquorum and Craft + Tailored as the cal. 9P2. Its dial is engine-turned with painted Roman numerals, and its gold deployant clasp is built into the case rather than fitted to the strap. Antiquorum and Sotheby's catalog it as the Vendôme Bi-Plan.

What makes the Bi-Plan different from other Vendômes?

The clasp. Monaco Legend notes the absence of a separate deployant, which sits instead between the lugs and under the case, and Antiquorum describes the 18k gold deployant clasp as integrated to the case. The 78090 and 67080 are hand-wound gold Vendômes of 33 mm and 26 mm on straps with separate buckles or clasps.

What should the case back read?

2220 and a serial beginning with C. Antiquorum cataloged one with case number C 124 195, which it later sold printing 2220 C124195 under the catalog number W1514457. Sotheby's and Monaco Legend cataloged examples numbered C127998 and C128002.

Is W1514457 the same watch as the 2220?

Yes. Antiquorum sold a 32 mm 18k yellow gold Vendôme Bi-Plan on the cal. 9P2 in 2019 as Reference 2220 with case number C 124 195, and the same case number appeared in its 2023 sale under Ref. W1514457, printed as 2220 C124195.

What should I check before buying a Ref. 2220?

The case back, for 2220 and a C serial; the deployant clasp built into the case; a 32 mm case in 18k yellow gold; and the movement, cataloged by most houses as the cal. 9P2. Amsterdam Vintage Watches catalogs a Piaget 40P in an example of about 2010, so ask for a photograph of the movement.
