Visual Description

The Ref. 2384 is the small Tank Française: a case of about 20 × 25 mm and 6 mm thick on an integrated bracelet with a hidden butterfly clasp, in stainless steel, or in stainless steel and 18k yellow gold on a steel and gold bracelet. The dial is silver, which Antiquorum describes as matte silver and Sotheby's as silver-grained or cream silvered, with Roman numerals and blued hands; some dealers call it white. A cabochon is set in the crown, and there is no date.

Reference Significance

The 2384 is the smallest Tank Française in steel and in steel and gold on Archiva, the size of the small 18k gold Ref. 1820. It is the case reference of both versions: Aponem catalogs a steel and gold example with its case back numbered 2384, and WannaBuyAWatch has sold a steel one recorded under 2384 and its catalog number, W51008Q3. The metal tells the two versions apart.

The larger Françaises are the midsize Ref. 2301, 25 × 30 mm and quartz, and the automatic Ref. 2302, 28 × 32 mm with a date at 6 o'clock.

Historical Context

Dated examples run from the late 1990s into the 2010s. Bachmann & Scher sold a steel and gold 2384 made in 1999, and Analog/Shift dates a steel one to the late 1990s or early 2000s. European Watch Co. sold a steel example with papers of 2002, Antiquorum records a steel and gold one sold new in December 2002, and Aguttes dates a steel and gold one circa 2010. Sotheby's has offered a steel W51008Q3 it dates circa 2020, after the end of the range given here; a second record of that date would extend it.

What to Look For

Read the case back and check the metal: a 2384 in steel throughout is the version cataloged as W51008Q3, and one in steel and 18k yellow gold is the two-tone version. Check the bracelet links for stretch and the clasp for smooth closing.

On the dial, look for crisp Roman numerals and even color. Antiquorum catalogs the secret signature at 10 o'clock on one steel and gold example, and Smith & Singer places it at VII on another. The movement is quartz, and a photograph of it shows which caliber a watch carries.

How to tell it apart

What separates a Ref. 2384 from its neighbors, and what to check before you buy or sell one.

What is a Cartier Tank Française Ref. 2384 worth?

Public auction and dealer results for Ref. 2384 (Small 20 × 25 mm, steel, quartz) from November 2023 to November 2026 come to $2,650 to $3,200, with a median of $3,100 across 5 sales of this exact reference. The most recent was $3,100 at Gerrards in October 2026. Ref. 2384 (Steel and gold, small or midsize): one sale, $2,700 at Aguttes, Mar 2024. Condition, service history, and the original box and papers move an individual watch within that range.

What is the Tank Française Ref. 2384?

The small quartz Tank Française: a case of about 20 × 25 mm on an integrated bracelet, in stainless steel or in stainless steel and 18k yellow gold, with a silver dial, Roman numerals, blued hands and no date. 2384 is the case reference of both versions; Aponem catalogs a steel and gold example with its case back numbered 2384.

How do the W51008Q3 and the W51007Q4 relate to the 2384?

They are catalog numbers, which are usually not engraved on the case. Cartier's user guide lists W51008Q3 as the small steel Tank Française, and WannaBuyAWatch has sold a steel 2384 with W51008Q3 recorded beside its serial, so the W51008Q3 is the steel 2384. European Watch Co. lists a small steel and gold quartz Tank Française of the same size as W51007Q4, but no auction house or dealer found prints W51007Q4 and 2384 on one watch, so Archiva does not yet list it as one of this reference's numbers.

How big is the 2384?

Catalogs give 20 × 25 mm in both metals, and 20 × 26 mm on some steel examples depending on how the case is measured, and about 6 mm thick. The midsize steel Française, the Ref. 2301, is 25 × 30 mm, and the large automatic Ref. 2302 is 28 × 32 mm.

What movement is in the 2384?

Quartz, cited as the Cartier Cal. 057. The steel and gold catalogs and listings found say only quartz, as do most steel ones, so a photograph of the movement is the way to see which caliber a watch carries.

Does the 2384 have a date?

No. WannaBuyAWatch lists no date function on its steel and its steel and gold examples, and none of the other records mentions one. The large automatic Ref. 2302 is the Tank Française with a date, at 6 o'clock.

What should I check before buying a 2384?

The metal first: steel throughout is the version cataloged as W51008Q3, steel with 18k yellow gold is the two-tone version, and the all-gold small model carries other numbers, such as the Ref. 1820. Then the bracelet links and the butterfly clasp. On the dial, look for crisp Roman numerals and even color; Antiquorum catalogs the secret signature at 10 o'clock on one steel and gold example, and Smith & Singer at VII on another.
