Visual Description

The 2366 is the large Tank Française in 18k white gold: a 28 × 32 mm case, polished and brushed, on an integrated white gold bracelet with a concealed deployant clasp. Sotheby's describes a sunburst silvered guilloché dial with painted Roman numerals, a date aperture and the secret signature at VII; Antiquorum places the date at 6 o'clock. The hands are blued steel, with a center seconds hand.

Reference Significance

The 2366 is the white gold version of the large automatic Tank Française. It shares its size, the Cal. 120 and the date at 6 o'clock with the yellow gold 1840 and the steel 2302. Sotheby's gives the caliber with 20 jewels, and Amsterdam Watch Company names the same Cal. 120.

Historical Context

The white gold 2366 appears in the records from about 2000: Sotheby's dates one circa 2000 and Amsterdam Watch Company one circa 2001, while Antiquorum and Bulang & Sons date theirs to the 2000s.

What to Look For

Read the case back for 2366 and a serial, and check the 18k marks on the case and the clasp, since white gold and steel look alike at a glance. The bracelet should be white gold throughout: check every link for stretch and look for replaced links. Confirm the automatic Cal. 120 and the date at 6 o'clock; one dealer's specification table lists this reference as quartz, which no catalog supports.

Antiquorum and Bulang & Sons give 28 × 32 mm, and Amsterdam Watch Company and Eppli give 28 mm across. Sotheby's catalogs one at 32 × 27 mm, 1 mm narrower; Archiva follows the majority.
