Visual Description

The 2605 is the Baignoire drawn out to an elongated oval in 18k yellow gold, 47 mm long and 21 to 22 mm wide, with a back secured by four screws. The dial is silvered and guilloché, with Roman numerals on most examples, under blued steel hands.

Amsterdam Vintage Watches has sold two with painted Arabic numerals, one signed Made in France at 6 o'clock. Examples are worn on leather, satin or alligator straps with an 18k yellow gold Cartier pin buckle.

Reference Significance

The 2605 is the quartz Allongée of its period, in 18k yellow gold. The Ref. 2514 in white gold and the Ref. 2515 in pink gold share its 47 mm length and its series of case numbers ending AF, but are hand-wound on the Cartier Cal. 060 MC.

All three are shorter than the Baignoire Allongée retailed by Cartier London from the late 1960s and its 1991 reissue, the Ref. W1507451, which measure about 23–24 × 52–54 mm.

Historical Context

Dated examples run from 1999, the year Bachmann & Scher gives for one sold with its box, to about 2005. No source consulted gives a production figure or calls the 2605 a Collection Privée watch.

What to Look For

Read the case back: 2605 with a case number ending AF, such as 121677 AF. A case numbered 2514 or 2515 is a hand-wound white or pink gold Allongée. The movement should be quartz and signed Cartier.

The long case softens under heavy polishing, so look along the oval for crisp edges at its ends.
