Visual Description
The Ref. 1353 is a Pasha chronograph of 35 to 36 mm in 18k yellow gold. Aguttes describes a round case with a screw-down back, a graduated rotating bezel and cabochons on the crown and pushers.
The dial is usually white or off-white with painted radial or black Roman numerals, two chronograph counters and a date subdial. Sotheby's has cataloged a gray gilt dial on a diamond-set example. Catalogs describe it on a leather strap with an 18k yellow gold Cartier deployant or folding clasp.
Reference Significance
The 1353 is the gold version of the Ref. 1352, the 35 to 36 mm steel quartz chronograph on the Cal. 212P. The Ref. 30009 is the larger 38 mm gold quartz chronograph on the cal. 053, and the Ref. 2111 the 38 mm gold automatic chronograph.
Sotheby's and Antiquorum name the movement Chronoreflex, and Sotheby's catalogs it as the Cal. 212P, or Q212P.
Historical Context
Antiquorum catalogs one example as made in 1997 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Cartier, and Aguttes has sold a Pasha LC Special Edition with a dial signed Cartier 1847. Antiquorum also records one sold on 19 December 1997.
The other dated examples run from about 1990 to about 2010: Aguttes dates one to circa 1990, Antiquorum one to circa 1994 and one to circa 2010, and Sotheby's examples to circa 1995, 1996 and 2000. No source found gives the year the reference was introduced or discontinued.
What to Look For
Read the case back for 1353 or 1353 1 and the MG case number. Catalogs measure 35 mm (Antiquorum), 35.5 mm (Sotheby's, Aguttes) and 36 mm (Sotheby's, Antiquorum).
Check that the chronograph starts, stops and resets and that the date changes cleanly. Ask for a photograph of the quartz movement, which Sotheby's gives as the Cal. 212P. On an LC Special Edition, check the Cartier 1847 signature and LC logo on the dial.
